Windows 10 End of Support Now: What Retailers Need to Know

Windows 10 end of support

Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 10 today.

The Windows 10 operating system is now out of updates, support, and fixes, which means that security risks are present for POS systems that manage credit card transactions and personal data. Approximately 40% of all computers globally are running on the affected systems, and hence, the number of security holes will rise as they are a tempting target. Over time, manufacturers' hardware will no longer be supported, which is why we anticipate an increase in equipment breakdowns, such as printers, scanners, terminals, and touchscreens.

There are four options for your Windows 10 computers.

Option 1: Upgrade them to Windows 11

Approximately 40% of our Windows 10 clients are unable to upgrade to Windows 11. Windows 11 needs more powerful hardware, which can slow down Windows 10. If possible, upgrade to Windows 11 ASAP. It generally runs faster on modern computers, but on old systems, it tends to be slower. I would not suggest hacking systems to get them to run Windows 11, as Microsoft doesn't guarantee updates or support for systems that bypass hardware requirements.

You can check if your computer is compatible with Windows 11 using Microsoft's free PC Health Check tool. This tool tells you whether your hardware meets the minimum requirements. Computers that meet requirements can upgrade to Windows 11 for free through Windows Update.

Instructions on how to do this can be found here.

Will Your Computer Run Windows 11? Check Compatibility in 60 Seconds.

I suggest running it on all the computers in the shop.

Option 2: Use the Microsoft Security Updates Option

If you pay Microsoft, they will give you support for a limited time.

In our experience, few customers opt for Extended Security Updates due to the cost and limited benefits.

Those of you who are using the free backup service using OneDrive can get it free by using your OneDrive account to sync your PC's settings via the Windows Backup feature. To do this, you must first update your Windows 10 to version 22H2 and then go to Settings > Windows Update to find the "Enrol now (ESU)" wizard. Within the wizard, you select "Sync settings to OneDrive" to sign in with your Microsoft account and enrol for free. You will find details on how to do it here.

Keep Using Windows 10 with Extended Security Updates!

Option 3: Leave them with the higher risk profile in Windows 10

Contrary to what many say, Australian laws do not tell you that you have to upgrade; however, it's not as simple as this, it never is, as the law states businesses holding personal information must "take reasonable steps to protect the information from misuse, interference and loss, as well as unauthorised access, modification or disclosure". Running POS systems on unsupported software may pose a problem with the "reasonable steps" requirement. Continuing to operate systems on unsupported systems may be viewed as negligence and a failure to maintain proper security controls.

Additionally, businesses processing credit and debit card transactions must adhere to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) requirements. It requires systems to have current security patches to protect against known vulnerabilities. Unsupported operating systems that no longer receive security patches automatically fail these requirements.

The immediate issue for most retailers here is whether they will be allowed to run software that connects to bank credit and debit systems. In the past, when this has occurred, we have seen financial companies cease support for outdated operating systems. We have had to move these systems to other computers in the shop and use older machines in the back for stock recording purposes. We certainly do not recommend attempting to hack these systems to work on older Windows versions, as fines are huge, e.g., $100,000 per month, plus the responsibility for fraudulent transactions may be shifted to you.

Option 4: Replace Hardware for Old Systems**

Systems that cannot run Windows 11 need hardware replacement.

In response to this challenge, we have been offering our clients a computer upgrade deal to help them transition to Windows 11-compliant systems.

Conclusion

There are issues to consider here. If you have any questions, contact our support team to discuss the matter further.

Windows 10 end of support

POS SOFTWARE

Windows 11

Windows 10 support has now ended. If your computer is running Windows 10, it will work; however, you will no longer get Microsoft technical support. This matters because it will be easier to hack. If you like, you can pay for Microsoft Extended Security Updates (ESU).

First step: check each PC

Start by checking if your computer can upgrade to Windows 11 using Microsoft's PC Health Check tool. It will also explain the details if it fails. For more information, see here.

What to do now

Run PC Health Check on every computer

If the PC is good

Suppose the device passes PC Health. We suggest scheduling an upgrade to Windows 11, which moves you to a supported, secure platform with ongoing updates. Please perform this upgrade outside your trading hours to prevent downtime.

If your computer fails

If a device fails the check, we recommend that you either enrol it in Windows 10 ESU, which means you will get Microsoft's support, but you have to pay for it, or replace the computer. Running a computer without Microsoft support is not recommended.

Currently, we recommend that your minimum computer now be an i5‑class CPU or equivalent, 8 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD for standard computers and your main computer have 16 GB RAM for back‑office. Ensure that whatever you get has sufficient USB ports for scanners, printers, and other devices.

FAQ

Q: Will Windows 10 stop working?

A: No, it keeps running. There will be no further free security updates, bug fixes, or Microsoft support, and the risk increases over time if you continue to use it.

Q: Is there a paid security option?

A: Yes, ESU adds security updates after the end of support

Q: What is the last Windows 10 version?

A: Version 22H2.

Q: How do I check Windows 11 readiness?

A: Use Microsoft's PC Health Check

Q: What is the Windows 11 basic computer?

A: Windows 11 needs at least a 64‑bit CPU, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI with Secure Boot, and TPM 2.0. We suggest a bit more to give you a smoother upgrade.

Windows 11 is now here.

POS SOFTWARE

Our advice is unchanged wait!

Overall the update from Windows 10 to Windows 11 now seems to be working.

Several of our users, despite our advice to wait, have been running our software on it.  It works, *sort of*. I say *sort of* as it is not thoroughly tested. The big problem is not our software but the equipment like scanners and printers. As expected, when doing the update, one of our clients found one receipt printer not working. In this case, we were able to fix this problem.

Despite Microsoft's claims, we have not seen any speed increases with the newer Windows software. Maybe there is some, but you would need an accurate stopwatch to tell you. Still, based on specifications, I suspect that you will see some on a laptop on Windows 11, but we have not tested that yet.

Also, what is clear now is that the significant improvement promised of running Android on your computer is at least a year away. Without that, I do not see anything urgent with waiting. Yes, there are some enhancements, but I doubt many are particularly interested in these. For example, Teams is better than skype, but most use now Zoom or Google Meet. Still, I suppose we will all need to learn to use Teams, but that is long-term.

Most corporates are planning to move middle of next year. This is because of all the problems that they had with Windows 10 updates. This is good advice as it gives a few months for people to test it. Gives Windows time to mature. Remember, Microsoft has promised to support Windows 10 until 2025, so there is little risk of delaying your Windows 11 experience.

Above all now, make sure that any computer or equipment you buy is Windows 11 compatible. You do not want to buy an obsolete computer.

If you will not wait, let us know before you do the update. We always need beta testers.

Time for you to consider the Win11 decision

POS SOFTWARE

It is expected that Windows 11 will be released shortly on 5 October. Many of you will be given an automatic update and if you do not act will be upgraded.

I hope you listened to us and have not brought a computer recently that cannot run Win11. If so, all you have got is a dinosaur.

You can find out whether your computer is eligible for a free upgrade here.

See at the green arrow why this computer above cannot run it.

While you can hack these requirements, there are risks. Some computers have been kicked out of Win11 after a while.

Current status.

We have tested preview editions of Win11 with our software, and several of our users have adopted it. We all have found issues. Not surprisingly, every site has different problems.

As a punt, I would say that over half the systems with Win11 have had to go back to Win10. Several of the others have had weird problems.

The major ones appear to be the start menu. In many systems, it goes crazy. We have no workaround for this, so we are reverting these sites to Win10.

Also, we find that Windows Defender is turned off in many systems in Win11. So computers are running with no virus protection. This can be fixed by reactivating it. This is something else after updating you need to consider.

Also, the Microsoft Teams program is suddenly appearing on a site. This forces people to stop in the middle of what they are doing and deal with this program! We find this Microsoft Teams program horrible. We used it before and found it unlike Zoom or Google Meet unstable so no one wants to use it, but it keeps demanding that we use it.  We have no workaround yet for this.

Now we are not sure what is the situation is with your other POS equipment. We expect that many will not work with Win11, but we cannot say for sure. So far, every major Windows update in this respect has caused such problems. This has resulted in people throwing out excellent equipment as they are no longer compatible with the new windows. So you are warned, go to Win11. You may need to buy new equipment.

Our advice is to consider Win7 when it took a while to work out, so we suggest that you wait till it is ironed out.

If you want to knockout Win11, see here

Also, the function that everyone is waiting on is that your computer with run Android will not be available. This is something that we really want to include in our software.

Hi Bernard
SO, I am currently operating on windows 10
How do I ensure that windows 11 will not automatically update my computer given that I still want to receive updates for windows 10
Cheers

Upgrading to Windows 11 is optional

Microsoft has stated that will be an optional upgrade. So if you want to stay on Windows 10, you can so you will be asked whether you want to upgrade to Win11. Say NO for now.

Having said that once the full version of Win11 is out and we have tested it for posbrowser and seen that it all checks out, we would recommend that you upgrade.

One thing to keep in mind with this is that Windows 10 has an end-of-support date and that’s October 14th, 2025. After that date, Microsoft won’t release any more security patches for Windows 10, so you’ll be more vulnerable to cyberattacks.
