Today at the newsagency conference

There was an interesting Q & A Session with the CEO of Fairfax and News Limited there. They were frank but not that open.

They mentioned a few points that I thought were notable.

1) There are fewer outlets for newspapers today than five years ago. I am sure it is subagents that is the cause of this. It may explain in part why although newspaper circulation in newsagencies has not dropped as much as overall circulation.

2) They are considering raising the cover price. This did surprise me.

3) The internet as it is, is not favourable to them. They pay about 30% commission to Apple, and I am sure that Apple gets the details of their client base but apparently they only rarely. Effectively, they do not get a client base out of the net.

4) They do not know where they will be in ten years.

In a sense, they are worse off than a newsagent. A newsagent can after all change his product mix, the newspaper companies cannot.

Scenes from the GNS market fair in Vic today

Newsagency GNS Show 2011

Over the years, this show in Melbourne is changing from a market day to a more tradiental show. It is an extremely good place for newsagents to meet the top people in their supplier organisations, see a fair section of the range and discuss any issues. Unfortunately it is becoming less a place to buy stock.

Today was as expected fairly quiet being Saturday. Tomorrow, it is when the show is expected to be busy. With the ANF conference starting Monday, it is expected that many people from interstate will be there too.

Our stand was continually busy. What interested our visitors the most was the new help system we have developed for our software which integrates our documentation. We certainly are proud how powerful our help systems has become. All that documentation we have written has really paid off.

Newsagency GNS Show 2011

GNS market fair in Vic today

At the Victorian GNS Market Fair, we will be demonstrating our newest smart software.

If you saw it last year, it is worth another look as we have come a long way since last year. Checkout the speed it goes over a mobile internet dongle. Many of the functions are just lightening fast now.

It was a big hit when we first released it in the GNS NSW show.

It also includes our two new software modules that greatly expand the reporting side of our software and has the mobile Phone Apps.

You can try it out at the show to check its flexibility.

See it for yourself.

IPS return file warning

An incorrect XChangeIT return's files was sent to newsagents this morning.

A correct file will be available at 2pm today, Friday 19th August 2011.

We are not sure whether the new copy sent at 2:00pm will replace or double up. So please double-check to make sure that you use the 2:00pm copy.

Victoria Fairfax Newsagent Direct Home Delivery Fees

Although we have a few points to get a determination on, effective from Monday, 5 September 2011, home delivery fees for home deliveries of The Age in Victoria will be.

Weekdays $0.25.............▲ Up by 66.7%
Saturday $0.275............▲ Up by 37.5%
Sunday $0.275..............▲ Up by 37.5%

This would make a maximum fee for a seven-day home delivery of $ 1.80, which is an increase of 56.5% on the previous delivery fee.

Furthermore, effective from Monday 5 September 2011, a postage and administration fee of $1.00 may be added to the monthly accounts of Victorian home delivery customers who receive The Age and have elected to receive their accounts via Australia Post.

Network return week problems

Recently some people electing not to use the offsale recall method, have been reporting problems that the return weeks with some magazines like TV Week and Woman's Day are wrong.

The problem is that there are several different ways of calculating a week number. We at POS Solutions prefers the ISO standard because the Australian government, and most Australian business accepted it, but many organisations do use different standards. That is why diaries often have different week numbers for the same date.

Probably, when XChangeIT was set up, it would have been a perfect time for the newsagency industry to adopt a standard week numbering system. However, then only Gordon and Gotch were using weekly returns and since no-one else cared about it, no standard week system was adopted.

So when Network decided to go for returns weekly, they adopted a system different than Gordan and Gotch. Their week number was always supposed to be one week behind the GG week number. However, this, for some reason, did not happen, which suited everyone fine.

Recently, in July, Network fixed up their code so inadvertently their week numbers in the XChangeIT files became one week out with the GG recall week. This is what has been causing the problems with the Network return week number in XChangeIT.

To fix this, Network has now agreed to add an extra week at the start of their recall timetable to bring their weeks back into alignment with the GG ones. This should happen in the next couple of weeks.

What this does show is the need of an industry standard for the calculation of recall weeks because now GG, Network and IPS all use a different system.

It is my view that we should all go to the ISO week number which would bring us into line with most Australian organisations. Barring that GG week number system should be adopted as it is already in place.

Network recall weeks

There may be an issue on some weekly magazines notably TV Week and Woman's Day coming through XChangeIT invoicing. We think that something was changed in the files in mid July sometime.

The matter is under investigation now.

Newspaper industry on the ABC circulation figures

POS SOFTWARE

The newspaper industry has issued a response to the latest ABC circulation figures. You can read it here together with the actual figures.

They blame the result on the current bad retail environment plus the move to digital devices like smartphones.

Since I do not see such bad results as these figures in newsagencies. I suspect that much of these losses are in sub-agencies and supermarkets.

ABC circulation figures magazines

Overall about 4.5% down, Pacific, ACP, etc. all went down. The only bright spot was the buying & selling category, which went up this quarter. It makes sense anyone thinking a boat or a piece of earthmoving equipment, will buy a magazine..

ABC circulation figures newspaper for April to June 2011

POS SOFTWARE

Newspapers went down April to June 2011 quarter compared to last year same time by 4.2%. Unlike the last quarter, there was no difference between weekdays, Saturday or Sunday. Fairfax did only slightly better than News Corp. The only point that was noticeable was that Queensland went down much more than everywhere else.

Since these figures are not being shown in benchmarking in newsagencies, most of these loses must have been in places that have direct supply like supermarkets.

I decided to do modelling to see what equation, I could fit to these figures and came up with this.

Formula: f(Mar-11,Dec-10,Sep-10,Jun-10) = 4480.56*sin(7.48779*Mar-11 - 0.129757) + 1.00354*powc(Mar-11*Jun-10, 0.499298) + 294.342/sin(-0.831681*Mar-11) - 2475.95*sin(545.416*Mar-11) - 1646.58

Based on this we can expect overall a 2.7% decline next quarter from this quarter.

Network wrong week

Some items on the network invoices coming through XChangeIT have week 32 for return when they should actually be week 33.

When processing these magazines, you need manually to fix it.

IPS magazines missing information

An updated copy of the return procedures for IPS is being distributed now.

There does appear to be issues with some IPS magazines not having the "extra" information field. This "extra" information must be filled in otherwise the return will not be accepted.

To get the "extra" codes on these magazines we suggest that you call IPS Customer Service on 1800 606 477.

Doing IPS Returns via XChangeIT

You need to do the following:

1. Set up IPS to return weekly. (Instructions have been previously sent out for this)

2. Make up one return form for the week for IPS and scan all the returns into this form.

3. When it comes time to sending the XChangeIT form, select one of the forms for the week (does not matter which one)

4. Do a test print?

5. Make sure the entries are on there in either the normal or supplementary and that ALL items have a supplier code and issue code. If they do not, then fix them or the item will not be credited.

6. Generate the file and send it off.

7. Newsagents can then log into IPS Online and run their reports the next morning after 9am and review which returns were accepted and credited.

9. They can then compare this with the POS printout (Test Print) and see if there are any issues.

This works and has been tested.
