Tue, 01/01/2019 Your sales performance

Now is the perfect time to assess how you went over the last quarter and last year in comparison to the year before. This will help you to determine your growth or decline rates. It will show you where you are going.

Although there are a few such reports with slightly different emphases, the one report I would like you to look at now in your point of sale software is the dissection comparison report.

You will find it

Wed, 02/01/2019 A business plan

If you are like me about now is the time of year that you look at your business and your business plans. It gives you a chance to access how you have done, what you did right, what mistakes you made in your planning and where you want to go. So I think it is not essential, but it is a good idea.

In my experience, there are three reasons SMB will do business plans, none of which are mutually exclusive

Thu, 03/01/2019 Law on issuing a receipt

There seems some confusion over when a receipt must be issued. So I decided to check on behalf of our clients.

In some places eg Victoria under consumer law it states that a receipt must be issued if the transaction is over $75 EX GST, which is where people are getting confused.

Fri, 04/01/2019 Open rates of email receipts

Have you ever wondered why when you go to some shops they ask you if you want an email receipt after they have printed out for you a receipt? It is not saving paper as they have already printed it.

It is marketing, something you can do too.

Here are some figures that show the marketing potential

Mon, 07/01/2019 Hey do you know your numbers?

Know your numbers

Amazingly few retailers do, in our point of sale software our clients have their business information immediately, does yours? Do you have to go into another system to get some of it?

Every retailer needs to know what they are selling each month:  what are their best sellers and where the money is coming from in their shop?

Tue, 08/01/2019 Taking photos in business

It is said that "A picture is worth a thousand words". So as the modern smartphones today have a decent camera, I find it very useful in business today. Some examples that I use pictures for

) When I am sending an email to someone of something, I will attach photographs.

) Many of our clients when they have a problem often they take a snap of the screen and then share it with us together with their query.

) If you are using our point of sale software and need a photo to attach to a stock item in our software, the smartphone can quickly get you that image.

Wed, 09/01/2019 Instant sales analysis

Analysing cash register and sales data, employee sales and stock performance are the make-or-break of running a modern retail business.

Sometimes you need these figures instantly, eg how much money is in the till NOW, what departments are NOW selling, are items being scanned NOW, etc. Here is how you get these figures and more

In your cash register, there are function keys, look for the one called "Sales Analysis", it generally is on the second page at the bottom. Now click it.

Fri, 11/01/2019 Watch the EFTPOS transaction

This is an EFTPOS problem that we have been working with a few EFTPOS providers recently without a solution yet available.

Imagine a customer goes to pay for a transaction with EFTPOS or Credit. He swipes the EFTPOS terminal, and the transaction is rejected. The EFTPOS terminal gives a beep, but it is not a loud beep. Sometimes the customer just assumed that it went through, picks up his goods and goes.

Sat, 12/01/2019 Adding notes to a transaction

It often happens that a transaction has an exclusive deal attached to it because something is not normal. The list can be endless for example the item may have a malfunction, has missing parts, the packaging is damaged, its past the expiry date, end-of-season merchandise, you are overstocked, etc.

Mon, 14/01/2019 Loyalty marketing and price cannibalization

VIP members customers marketing promotions

I was reading an article that I thought was very interesting here and I think retailers will find it an interesting read even if like me they have some doubts about some of the points.

Here are some points I agree with

Tue, 15/01/2019 PDF vs Word

File formats

Our point of sale software gives a lot of flexibility for sending invoices, statements and reports by email. All are very quick and easy to produce. The main formats people use are Word and PDF to send documents.

There are some points you should be aware of in your selection.

Wed, 16/01/2019 Thermal receipt paper

Here are some more tips for buying thermal receipt paper.

I do suggest buying decent paper if only as it does not give a professional impression if you use some paper that looks cheap.

Wed, 16/01/2019 Lottoland Australia still kicking

The government outlawed betting on "synthetic lotteries" which are now in effect which we were told would effectively sign the death warrant for gambling companies like Lottoland in Australia, but Lottoland isn't going. I doubted they would as there is too much money involved.

Check out the lottoland site. Currently the US power at $571 million looks interesting, plus they have a new product "Jackpot betting."

Thu, 17/01/2019 new i9 computers

i9 intel

Point of sale software has to be fast, so people are switching over their old processors to the new i9 processors because of the speed increase. In retail speed is everything and the i9 is a fantastic piece of hardware.

So even though our system is the fastest point of sale system, I know, check out the transaction speeds in yellow below

Fri, 18/01/2019 Stop dead stock coming in

Often dead stock comes into the shop because someone has accidentally ordered it. If it gets in, what it will do is take up space, hurt your cash flow and not pay any of the rent. This is how you can mark stock so that you and others do not accidentally order it.

In your point of sale software go to the stock maintenance, and/or stock received.

Now edit the item, see image below.

Mon, 21/01/2019 Researchers Identify a 2-Minute Trick That Stops You Craving Fatty Foods

I have often wondered why our clients in cake shops, restaurants and pizza parlour are rarely fat. If you put me in such places, I am sure I would get into real trouble.

Tue, 22/01/2019 The future of cashdraws, SmartTill

A new range of cash draws are coming on the market, with some very neat functions in them. This is the SmartTill.

One functions that they have that I particularly liked is that this one has a weight scale inside of them if any unauthorised cash is taken out of the till, the till instantly sends an alarm.

Check out this video at 2 minutes 50 seconds to see it in action.

I expect in about a year we will have an Australian version available for our clients.

Wed, 23/01/2019 Why is my cloud backup taking so long?

One question, I get asked a lot is why does a cloud backup take so long?

The big problem is that the initial point of sale data is so big and there is a lot of data to back up.

There does not seem to be a pattern as sometimes it goes quickly and sometimes it takes forever. Part of the problem is that few SMB have commercial grade internet. So in my experience, the backup times are at least double the times quoted by the salesmen for cloud backups.

Thu, 24/01/2019 How to quickly change your sale price

When ringing up items in your point of sale software, what you can do is modify quickly the amounts being charged up or down by using the discounts and surcharge buttons.

Note that the discounts can be set up to be preset so its one button handling.

Fri, 25/01/2019 Ecommerce choices for Small Businesses

Our users are mainly picking these two options now for doing e-commerce and both are excellent choices.

This is  the option I suggest particularly if your web technical software knowledge is small

Fri, 25/01/2019 Another cheap attack on us

A competitor made another nasty attack on us, the last attack on us readers here may recall was to attack us as our prices were too low. Their solution was interesting, they raised their prices.

Now they made some new claims against us. My first reply was ignored, so I made a second reply with this and took a screenshot here.

Sun, 27/01/2019 Australia day 2019

My daughter holding up the Australian

Wishing you and your family a Happy Australia Day

As always, we got hit with plenty of support questions, our clients get their moneys' worth. Fortunately, our support lines were all open today.

Update today on Sunday there were some problems in NSW with EFTPOS through Telstra other than that it is very quiet, so quiet its unnerving at POS Solutions

Mon, 28/01/2019 Use technology to use Your Shelf Space Effectively

What retailers need to do is identify the stock that their customers want and can see when they come into the shop.

If the customer does not see it, then many will not buy it.

What you need is your hot stock in a prominent display that shows off this product so that your customers know exactly where to go to find it.

Let us find them

Go to your cash register reports

Tue, 29/01/2019 Promotional packaging and marketing

Promotional packaging is all about making your product stand out from the crowd.

If you go to the supermarkets, you will see it filled with many special promotional packs.

You will find that they are a better way of moving dead stock then discounting. The idea is to take some stock that is not selling make a bundle with something that is selling well.

The software tools to set it up can be found here.

Tue, 29/01/2019 More companies dropping support for Win XP

If you sell Telco products through Touch systems, Touch now requires that all their clients upgrade to the new version.

The kicker is that the new version requires Win 7 or Win 10 which means that the software will not run on an XP  computer.

Wed, 30/01/2019 Instant Asset Write Off the plus and minus

$25K instant tax writeoff

The good news is that the instant asset write off has been extended for this financial year and even better has been increased from $20,000 to $25,000. This tax write off has saved heaps of money and cash flow for my clients.

Here is how it works

Thu, 31/01/2019 NO point of sale system = NO business

A massive power surge went through a client of ours a few days ago sometime in the night, and when everything started up again, the server that runs their system gave this.

Blue screen of death
